The Topping Rose, ideal Hamptons retreat

A refreshingly low-key atmosphere in a Greek Revival-styled inn and restaurant.

Built in 1842 for one of Bridgehampton’s most prominent citizens, Topping Rose House stands at a crossroads that has been integral to the community it calls home since the earliest days of American history.

The mansion at One Bridgehampton – Sag Harbor Turnpike is one of the few remaining examples of its kind in the area. And it is an ideal and cosy fall retreat.

The home, with its flat roof, cupola, pilasters and frieze band, was designed in a local version of the Greek Revival style, which was immensely popular throughout the country at the time.

Behind the house and to the east is its barn, a two-story wood structure with a peaked-gable roof with a cupola in the center.

Now the hotel has a cool, contemporary décor with touches of tradition.

All the 22 rooms, either in the house, the studio or the cottages are very spacious.  We love the one we stayed, overlooking the pool.

The palette was soothing and the ambience is a mix of sophistication and hand made furniture and décor.

Cottage rooms are more modern and private, with garden or rooftop access.

The restaurant at Topping Rose House brings acclaimed chef Tom Colicchio’s seasonal American cooking to the East End. Open year-round, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily, with brunch served on the weekend. A wrap-around porch, open seasonally, leads to the 25-seat Bar Room, a welcoming place for a drink and a bite. Guests can sit at the aqua lacquered bar or lounge beside one of the two original fireplaces.

Farm-to-table is more than a concept here.

Tom Colicchio who opened Gramercy Tavern with Danny Meyer in 1994 and in 2001, the critically acclaimed Craft then Craftbar in New York and Los Angeles take it to the next level by growing his own produce and raising his own livestock.

He also pick veggies just steps to the kitchen.
